Unheralded Malaysian pair reached mixed doubles semis

Malaysia's Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying reached the semi-finals of the YONEX SUNRISE India Open Superseries on Friday to stay in the hunt for their first Superseries crown but they will be up against three Indonesian pairs in the final four.

The fifth seeds stunned second seeds Songphon Anugritayawon-Kunchala Voravichitchaikul of Thailand in straight games to make their mark in New Delhi. Showing no nerves at all, the young pair scored a convincing 21-13, 21-16 victory in only 24 minutes and will challenge Indonesians Fran Kurniawan-Pia Zebadiah Bernadet for a place in Sunday's final. The third seeded Indonesians reached the last four when they beat Thailand's Maneepong Jongjit-Savitree Amitapai 21-15, 21-10. There could be an all-Indonesian finals as the other semi-final will see fourth seeds Tantowi Ahmad-Liliyana Natsir facing seventh seeded compatriots Muhammad Rijal-Debby Susanto.

Liu Ying failed to make it a double celebration as she and partner Chong Sook Chin were knocked out of the women's competition by Hong Kong's Poon Lok Yan-Tse Ying Suet, who won 23-21, 21-10. Another Malaysian pair, former world No. 1s Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui were also eliminated when they fell 21-15, 21-16 to fourth seeded Indonesians Meiliana Jauhari-Greysia Polii.

In the men's doubles, top seeds Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong of Malaysia, who are hoping to end a 15-month OSIM BWF World Superseries drought by winning in New Delhi, safely reached the semi-finals. The former Asian Games gold medallists were given a fright by fifth seeded South Koreans Cho Gun Woo-Kwon Yi Goo before prevailing 21-19, 21-16. They will now play fourth seeds Hirokatsu Hashimoto-Noriyasu Hirata for a place in Sunday's final.
