SOUTH KOREA END JINX FOR FIRST UBER CUP CROWN

KUALA LUMPUR (15 MAY 2010) – South Korea ended their Uber Cup jinx in style when they dethroned China 3-1 in the final of the 23rd edition of the World Team Championships for women at the Putra Stadium in Bukti Jalil today.
The pumped up Koreans rose to the occasion and handed the mighty Chinese a lesson in badminton to win their first ever Uber Cup after the disappointment of losing their previous five finals – all to China.
The Koreans broke down the the Great Wall in style after winning the first singles through Bae Seung Hee and the first doubles through Lee Hyo Jung-Kim Min Jung.
Wang Xin pulled a point back for China when she won the second singles but Korea made sure the cup was theirs when second doubles Lee Kyung Won-Ha Jung Eun won the third winning point.
"This is a historic day for Korean badminton. We reached the finals five times before and we were beaten in all five by China. But today it was a different story, we were not the second fiddle.
“We've had enough of losing to the Chinese. The players were determined to break the jinx and we did it in Kuala Lumpur. We will remember the Putra Stadium and the supporters for their support,” said Korea team manager Kim Jong Soo.
“We are worthy winners. China under estimated us. Tomorrow is Teachers Day and the players presented the perfect present to their teachers (coaches).”
Korea’s top singles player Bae Seung Hee put her country on the right track when she dumped World No 1 Wang Yihan in straight sets, winning 23-21, 21-11 in 49 minutes.
The Chinese camp was shell shocked with the early setback as they had expected Wang Yihan to deliver to first point to give the defending champions the psychological boost and advantage.
But the Chinese were virtually speechless and a sullen looking Li Yongbo – the Chinese chief coach – spoke of the mood in the camp as the Koreans, boosted by Seung Hee’s win, took the first doubles as well with Lee Hyo Jung-Kim Min Jung battling for 66 minutes before registering a 18-21, 21-12, 21-15 win over Ma Jin-Wang Xiaoli.
Wang Xin narrowed the deficit to 1-2 when she defeated Sung Ji Hyun in a three setter before winning 21-14, 16-21, 21-7 in 59 minutes.
Korea had played five Uber Cup finals – in 1988, 1990, 1992, 2002 and 2004 – but China denied them the title on all occassion.
For the record, China had not been beaten since 1998 with the last defeat in 1996 when they were beaten 1-4 by Indonesia in the final in Hong Kong.

WE WILL BE BACK STRONGER, SAYS YONGBO

KUALA LUMPUR (15 MAY 2010) – “We will be back stronger,” said China chief coach Li Yongbo after the defending champions surrendered the Uber Cup to South Korea - going down 1-3 in the final at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil today.
The mighty Chinese had been the undisputed Uber Cup queens since 1998.
However, the Great Wall crumbled this evening as the Koreans broke the jinx of having lost the last five Uber Cup finals to China.
Yongbo blamed inexperience as the main cause of the defeat and said: “China did not play well today although I had confidently predicted that we will retain the Cup.
“However, confidence alone which was based on our past matches in the group stage, quarter-finals and the semi-finals, cannot win title. Having confidence does not mean you win.”
In the same breath, Yongbo added that most of the teams do not want China to keep on winning.
"It becomes rather boring. So it is good to let Korea win the Cup to give badminton some variety," he quipped.
Yongbo said China will now prepare for other upcoming tournaments like the World Championships and the Asian Games.
“But we will be back for the Uber Cup. We want to take the Cup back in two years time. The young players who froze today will be much stronger and more experienced to face such a crowd,” added Yongbo.
“Anyway, I wish to congratulate the Koreans for their splendid win. They deserve to lift the Cup. They were the better team.”

UBER CUP UPDATE: SOUTH KOREA WIN FIRST EVER UBER CUP

KUALA LUMPUR (15 May 2010) - South Korea won their first ever Uber Cup when they beat defending champions China 3-1 in the final that was played this evening at the Putra Stadium in Kuala Lumpur.
The Chinese, who have won the Uber Cup for the last five editions, did not have the best of start when world No. 1 Wang Yihan fell to Bae Seung Hee in the first singles.
The South Koreans then capitalised on that win to pick up their second point through Lee Hyo Jung-Kim Min Jung in the first doubles.
And while China managed to give themselves a fighting chance when they grabbed their first point through Wang Xin in the second singles, the second doubles would prove to be pivotal.
Despite losing the first set 19-21, the pair of Lee Kyung Won-Ha Jung Eun kept their nerves intact to take the second set 21-14 to set up the decider in the rubber set.
And it was close with against the Chinese pair of Du Jing-Yu Yang when they played catch-up at the start before the score went from point to point up until 13-13.
After that, it was all South Korea as they went on to win the third set 20-18 to land their first ever Uber Cup crown.

UBER CUP UPDATE: WANG XIN BRINGS CHINA’S FIRST POINT TO PUT SCORE AT 2-1

KUALA LUMPUR (15 May 2010) - Wang Xin won the first point for China in the second singles when she beat Sung Ji Hyun in three sets to put the score at 2-1 to the advantage of South Korea.
The Koreans had taken the first two points in the Uber Cup finals through Bae Seung Hee in the first singles and then Lee Hyo Jung-Kim Min Jung in the first doubles.
And while there were thoughts of wrapping things up for South Korea’s first Uber Cup crown in the second singles, Wang Xin clearly had other ideas.
She won the first set 21-14 in 18 minutes before a lapse in the closing stages of the second set allowed Ji Hyun to steal to a 21-16 victory.
But the third set was all Wang Xin as she took the early lead before coasting to a 21-7 win in just under an hour.
With the score at 2-1, the second doubles will take to the court next with China’s Du Jing-Yu Yang taking on Lee Kyung Won-Ha Jung Eun.

UBER CUP UPDATE: SOUTH KOREA PICK UP SECOND POINT THROUGH SCRATCH PAIR

KUALA LUMPUR (15 May 2010) - South Korea’s scratch pair of Lee Hyo Jung-Kim Min Jung won the second point in the Uber Cup finals when they beat China’s top duo of Ma Jin-Wang Xiaoli in a three-set thriller that lasted over an hour.
The two Jungs lost the first set 21-18 to their better known opponents before recovering to win the second set 21-12.
Both matches lasted a mere 21 minutes.
But it was the third set that Hyo Jung-Min Jung showed their determination to win where even though the score stood at 4-4 at one time, they never really looked back as the Chinese pair played catch up only to lose 21-15 in 24 minutes.
Next up will be the second singles where Sung Ji Hyun will be facing Wang Xin.

UBER CUP UPDATE: SEUNG HEE OVERCOME YIHAN TO WIN THE FIRST POINT FOR SOUTH KOREA

KUALA LUMPUR (15 May 2010) - Bae Seung Hee gave South Korea the best of start with the first point in their Uber Cup final clash against China’s Wang Yihan in the first singles.
The current world No. 1 Yihan was stronger at the start of the first set but Seung Hee used her experience and determination to defend before taking the first set 23-21 in 28 minutes.
With the win, Seung Hee’s confidence grew and she was quick to capitalised when she raced to a 15-8 lead before wrapping up the second set and the first point for South Korea 21-11 in 21 minutes.
South Korea will now look at the first women doubles Lee Hyo Jung-Kim Min Jung for their second point when they square up against China’s Ma Jin- Wang Xiaoli next.

Firdasari Kalah, Indonesia Terjegal

MEW CHOO APOLOGISES FOR HER DEFEAT

KUALA LUMPUR (12 MAY 2010) – The expectations were high on Wong Mew Choo to deliver the morale boosting first point but the country’s top woman shuttler was left apologising for her poor show in her 9-21, 16-21 defeat to Indonesia’s No 2 Adriyanti Firdasari in her the first singles in the Uber Cup quarter-final.

“I am sorry, really sorry that I was a big let down,” said Mew Choo, who was expected to win Malaysia’s first point against the Indonesians.

After all the Ipoh lass had beaten Adriyanti in the team final at the Laos SEA Games in December enroute to Malaysia’s 3-1 win to win the gold medal.

“It was a below par performance from me. I was rather tensed. Nothing went right for me. Even when I fought back in the second set it was all in vain as my opponent controlled the match throughout.

“I had beaten her in the Laos SEA Games. But all that did not count today. Adriyanti is an attacking player and I was not able to counter her aggressive play.

At the end of the press conference, Mew Choo was overcome with emotions and simply threw herself to the ground before Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) sports psychologist Frederick Tan came to consoled her.

Adriyanti was pleased that she managed to beat Mew Choo in front of the fanatical home fans although the big Indonesian turnout also made their presence felt at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

“I had lost to Mew Choo several times before. It is nice feeling to beat her in front of her home fans. Mew Choo was able to read my game in the second set but I was able to check that. It is an important point for us in our quest to reach the semifinal,” said Adriyanti.

Tunggu Superioritas China

Meski demikian, Li Yongbo tak lekas mengharapkan anak asuhnya terlalu over confident.

PREVIEW: CHINA HOT FAVOURITES TO RETAIN UBER CUP

WORLD champion Lu Lan and World No 3 Wang Lin have been dropped by China for the Uber Cup Finals, but the defending champions still remain the hot favourites to retain the title.

Take a look at the “stars” in their squad who will compete in the 23rd edition of the Uber Cup at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur from May 9-16.

China, the world’s most populous country, don’t seem to have any problem in churning out world beaters.

China who have the luxury of having five women’s singles players in the top five in world ranking have named current World No 1 Wang Yihan, Wang Xin (No 2) and Wang Shixian (No 4). Also in the team is the experienced Jiang Yanjiao, who is ranked No 5.

As Denmark’s No 1 woman shuttler and reigning All-England and European champion Tine Rasmussen said: “China don’t seem to have producing champions” and they will certainly start as the favourites.

The left handed Wang Xin is no stranger to the Malaysian badminton fraternity, having won the Proton Malaysia Open Super Series.

Ma Jin-Wang Xiaoli are the world’s top ranked women’s doubles pair as of the latest world ranking list. Second ranked Du Jing-Yu Yang and Pan Pan-Tian Qing adds weight to the mighty Chinese.

Malaysia suffered a double blow when Lydia Cheah and Julia Wong, ranked second and third respectively in the team, picked up knee injuries during training and have been replaced by Sannatasah Saniru and Sonia Cheah. Sonia, younger sister of Lydia, reached the quarter-finals in the recent World Junior Championships in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Still, Malaysia are confident of reaching at the quarter-finals at least from their group. Malaysia can count on their No 1 woman shuttler Wong Mew Choo and the strong doubles pair Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui, who enjoyed a brief stay as World No 1 last year. Mew Choo is the reigning Yonex-BWF Masters Super Series Finals singles champion.

Malaysia are drawn in Group A with China and the United States of America (USA).

Three time champions Indonesia and three time runners-up Denmark look good bets to advance to the last eight from Group B while five time winners Japan should top Group C with Russia and Germany will have to fight it out to advance.

South Korea, who lost to China in five finals should have no difficulty in topping D with India, powered by World No 6 Saina Nehwal should join them. The other team in the group is South Africa.

A fresh draw will be conducted for the knockout stage.

GROUP A: China, Malaysia, USA
GROUP B: Indonesia, Denmark, Australia
GROUP C: Japan, Russia, Germany
GROUP D: South Korea, India, South Africa
