Contrasting fortunes for defending champions

Men's singles champion Sony Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia was bounced out of the Li Ning Singapore Open Superseries while women's champion Saina Nehwal barely survived to make the cut to the second round on the opening day of the US$200,000 tournament on Wednesday.

Sony, who was carrying a wrist injury coming into the tournament, faced 2009 champion Bao Chunlai of China in the match of the day at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. The seventh seeded Bao Chunlai (left), won a tight first game 21-19 before romping home in the second 21-13.

The crowd were treated to a world-class display of stinging smashes, deft dropshots and excellent courtcraft in the opening set which saw the lead exchange hands on numerous occasions. However, serving at 19-20 down, Sony's smashed into the net to gift Bao Chunlai the psychologically-important first game.

"As the defending champion, I really wanted to win this tournament," a disappointed Sony told a post-match conference. "But I had hurt my waist during training six months ago. I thought it would stand up to the task but the injury affected my game, especially in the second set. I felt OK in the first set but thereafter, it troubled me."

Bao Chunlai credited his win to his patience and a strategy to tire out his opponent. He said: "Sony was not in top form, especially in the second game. I played a patient and controlled game and am happy that the tactic worked. I really hope to play well in this tournament as this is the first (OSIM BWF World Superseries tournament) Olympic qualification event. It is important to me that I do well in Singapore."

World junior champion Viktor Axelsen got his revenge for last week's first round SCG Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold loss to Malaysia's Wong Choong Hann when the Dane won their rematch 25-23, 21-19. He will now face Bao Chunlai for a place in the quarter-finals. The top two seeds in the men's singles, former world champions Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia and China's Lin Dan also qualified for Thursday's second round.

Reigning Olympic and Asian Games gold medallist Lin Dan, defeated South Korea's Shon Wan Ho 21-14, 21-15 while top seed Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia was made to fight his way into the second round after Malaysia qualifier Liew Daren took the first game 22-24. However, Taufik used his experience and made a comeback 21-12, 21-18.

Saina (right), meanwhile, took on 2009 world champion Lu Lan of China for the second week in a row. Last week in Bangkok, the Indian ace needed three games to defeat her opponent in the opening round and it was the same once again in Singapore. The Commonwealth Games gold medallist took the first game 21-18, before falling 21-13 in the second. Just like in Bangkok, Saina rose up to take the third 21-16 to seal her place in the second round, where she will meet Taipei's Cheng Shao Chieh.

"I'm really happy to be here and I hope to continue my winning rhythm against Chinese players. I won quite a few matches against them, it's a good advantage. I hope that this tournament will contribute to me qualifying for the Olympics," said the Commonwealth Games gold medallist. Joining Saina in the second round is top seed and world No.1 Wang Shixian, who defeated Singapore's Fu Mingtian 21-10, 21-15.

The Victor Korea Open Superseries Premier winner will now take on world champion Wang Lin for a place in the quarter-finals. Wang Lin, who has only just recovered from a long-term knee injury, booked her place in the second round by beating Russia's Anastasia Prokopenko 21-15, 21-8. Second seed Wang Yihan safely made it to the next round when she ousted Indonesia's Adrianti Firdasari 21-17, 21-17

Lin Dan’s chance to surpass Chong Wei

Arguably the best player in badminton history, Olympic and Asian champion Lin Dan has the opportunity to put one over his long-time rival Lee Chong Wei in the Li Ning Singapore Open Superseries.

The Chinese superstar, who is the second seed in the tournament behind Indonesia's Taufik Hidayat (right), hopes to capture a title he has never won before. The three-time world champion also knows that if he qualifies for the quarter-finals, he will replace Chong Wei - who is skipping the tournament - as the No. 1 ranked player in the OSIM BWF World Superseries rankings.

The Malaysian, who is known as the 'King of the Superseries' for winning 18 Superseries titles since 2007, has dominated the rankings since the start of the Superseries four years ago. He, however, is skipping the Singapore leg as his main priority this year is the BWF World Championships in London this coming August. This has opened the door for Lin Dan, who has accumulated 25,390 points in the OSIM Standings, to lie second behind Chong Wei, who has 29,550 points. To add more spice to the tournament, the Li Ning Singapore Open Superseries is also the first Superseries in the Olympic qualifying period which began on May 1.

Lin Dan will began his campaign in Singapore with a match against South Korea's Shon Wan Ho. If, as expected he wins, he will face a daunting second round tie against either Denmark's Jan O Jorgensen or Japan's Kenichi Tago. Taufik, who triumphed in Singapore in 2001 and 2005, takes on Malaysian qualifier Liew Daren, who stunned compatriot and former All England champion Hafiz Hashim in the qualifying round on Tuesday. The tie of the first round, however, could be the meeting between defending champion Sony Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia and 2009 champion Bao Chunlai of China.

The winner will face either Malaysian veteran Wong Choong Hann or world junior champion Viktor Axelsen. Choong Hann defeated the Dane in straight games in Thailand a week ago. Defending champion Saina Nehwal of India (left), will also face a familiar opponent, taking on 2009 world champion Lu Lan in a repeat of last week's first round tie in Bangkok. The Commonwealth Games champion was made to struggle before beating the Chinese ace in three games a week ago.

The main story, however, is which of China's top three women - Wang Shixian, Wang Yihan and Wang Xin - can help themselves to the title. Wang Shixian won the Proton Malaysia Open Superseries and the Yonex All England Open Superseries Premier while Wang Yihan took home the Victor Korean Open Superseries Premier crown. Thailand's Porntip Buranaprasertsuk is the only female singles player to win a Superseries crown this season when she won in India, but that was partly because the Chinese players skipped the event.

Singapore Boys’ Town takes on world’s top shuttlers in exclusive badminton clinic

The world's top men's singles shuttlers Lin Dan and Boonsak Ponsana thrill boys in OSIM Badminton Clinic in Singapore.

Fifteen youths from Singapore's Boys' Town had the thrill of a lifetime today as they met them in an exclusive badminton clinic organised by OSIM International. The exclusive clinic was held in conjuction with the Li-Ning Singapore Open, part of the OSIM BWF World Superseries, which is currently taking place at the Singapore Indoor Stadium until 19th June.

Coached by Richard Yeo of the Chinese Swimming Club Li Ning Badminton Academy, the boys from Boys' Town had the rare opportunity to see, up close, Lin Dan (China) and Boonsak Ponsana (Thailand), ranked 2nd and 6th respectively in the world, demonstrate the finer moves of the game. Besides learning some useful tips from the coach, the boys even traded strokes with the two star shuttlers.

"Badminton is a sport with fantastic global appeal; attracting individuals of all ages and backgrounds, young and old," said OSIM Assistant General Manager, Lynn Tan. "We are truly happy to extend this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the children of Boys' Town to learn from two of the world's best badminton players! We are grateful to Lin Dan and Boonsak (left) for giving their time in this clinic."

To cap a memorable day out, besides the badminton clinic, the boys were treated to seats for the tournament. This event is supported by Li Ning and Singapore Badminton Association. The 3-year sponsorship of the OSIM BWF World Superseries continues OSIM's commitment to promoting sports as part of a healthy lifestyle. OSIM also has helped to promote the growth of triathlon over the past decade. The OSIM Singapore International Triathlon this July will mark its 10th anniversary.
