Alex Yoong Gabung Lotus F1

Kuala Lumpur - Tim Malaysia yang akan debut di kancah Formula 1, Lotus, merekrut figur dalam negerinya, Alex Yoong, untuk memulai kiprah mereka di dunia jet darat. Namun Yoong digaet bukan untuk menjadi pembalap.

Dilaporkan kantor berita Bernama, mantan pembalap F1 itu dipekerjakan Lotus untuk sebuah peran "senior". Pria berusia 33 tahun itu ditunjuk sebagai Kepala Pengembangan Pembalap (Head of Driver Development) untuk kawasan Asia.

Bersamaan dengan penunjukan Yoong juga direkrut ketua tim Litespeed di arena F3, Nino Judge, sebagai Head of Driver Development untuk Eropa. Sedangkan Mua Sharizman dipilih sebagai ketua operasi balapan (Racing's Head of Operations) Asia.

Yoong pernah tampil di 18 balapan F1 bersama Minardi di tahun 2001 dan 2002, tapi tidak memperoleh poin. Setelah itu ia sempat berkiprah di ajang A1GP dan beberapa kali main di GP2 Asia di tahun ini.

Bulan lalu bos Lotus Tony Fernandez mengatakan sudah mengantongi satu pembalap tapi belum mau menyebutnya namanya. Selain itu mereka juga konon sedang mengincar Jarno Trulli dan juara dunia 1997, Jacques Villeneuve. Pembalap lokal Fairuz Fauzy hampir dipastikan masuk tim, minimal sebagai pembalap ketiga.

QUALIFIERS FROM NORTH, CENTRAL AMERICA AND CARIBBEAN

35 teams, 3.5 places
Twelve teams are contesting Round 3 of North, Central America and Caribbean qualifying. The top two from each of the three groups will advance to the final hexagonal stage, from where three sides will qualify directly for South Africa 2010 and the fourth-placed team will take on the fifth-placed finisher in South American qualifying for a place at the world finals.

The European qualifiers began in August 2008, with 53 teams playing in nine groups on a home and away basis.

QUALIFIERS FROM ASIA

43 countries in Asia did the qualification to get 4.5 places to be the vice from Asia. Australia, Japan, Korea Republic and Korea DPR qualified directly for South Africa 2010, while Bahrain was victorious in a play-off against Saudi Arabia and now plays in an intercontinental play-off against New Zealand for the last ticket in Oceania/Asia for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa.

After two preliminary rounds, 20 teams from 53 teams except, host-world cup, South Africa play in five groups of four. The group winners qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa.
